11/15/2019- Marinette County saw three fatal motorcycle crashes in 2019 and while that may not initially seem like a significant number, the fact that the local five-year average is just one and that none of the operators killed were wearing a helmet is something that’s caught the attention of law enforcement and safety officials. Randy Wiessinger with Wisconsin’s Bureau of Transportation Safety delivered an updated report on county vehicle crashes and related injuries and fatalities to the County’s Traffic Safety Commission this week. Two of the fatal motorcycle accidents in the county this year involved deer and while those types of crashes are hard to prevent in our rural region, Wiessinger says the outcome may have been different had the riders been wearing proper safety gear. He hopes a push for enhanced public outreach and education will help prevent more of these types of incidents in the future.
