The trial of former Menominee County Sheriff Deputy Brian Helfert began yesterday afternoon after a day and a half of jury selection. According to court records, the single charge in this trial follows the accusation of dozens of incidents of abuse against then-minor began when the alleged victim was a freshman in high school, around 2005. The alleged crimes happened both before and after the victim turned 16-years-old. The victim came forward to report abuse in 2022. Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg says, “this is a case about betrayal by a once trusted, well-liked, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant named Brian Helfert.”
Defense Attorney Trenton Stupak says, “this allegation is between 2006 and 2008. So, you’re going to be asked to step back 15 to 17 years ago and try to determine whether there was an accusation that you should find proof beyond a reasonable doubt?”
Since 2022, the 16 charges related to allegations from four separate accusers have narrowed to a single charge of Criminal Sexual Conduct – Second Degree. Helfert’s trial resumes this morning at the Menominee County Courthouse.
