09/28/2018- The first death from an adenovirus outbreak in the Upper Peninsula has been reported. The death occurred in the central UP, though few other details about the incident have been released. As reported earlier this month, Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties has been investigating a string of severe adenovirus cases that led to respiratory illnesses and the hospitalization of at least six adults. Officials say the virus a common cause of cold-like illnesses, but has the potential to cause more substantial health issues like bronchitis and pneumonia. The infection is passed from person-to-person through coughing and sneezing or by coming into contact with surfaces where the virus has landed. Public Health is encouraging people to use the same prevention strategies at this time as they would throughout the year, which include frequent hand washing and staying home when you are ill. Public Health and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to monitor the situation.
