Local World War II, Korean, and Vietnam-era veterans have a chance to visit the national memorials created in their honor. The Upper Peninsula Honor Flight takes veterans on a free one-day trip to Washington, D.C. to tour eleven of the nation’s best-known war monuments. Scott Knauf with the UP Honor Flight says the biannual event pairs 75 veterans with a guardian for a trip they may never otherwise get to experience. The next UP Honor Flight is scheduled for May 23rd. Flights depart from and land at the Delta County Airport in Escanaba. Knauf says the homecoming for the vets is as important as the trip itself.
The UP Honor Flight is in its seventh year and is entirely donor-funded. Applications for both veterans and guardians interested in participating in the next Honor Flight are available online at upperpeninsulahonorflight.org
