A suicide bombing attack outside of the Abbey gate at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan on Thursday, August 26 struck very close to home. The suicide attack itself and the fighting that followed caused the death of 13 members of the United States Armed Forces who were trying to protect the airport and resulted in injuries to at least 18 members of the United States forces, including former Wausaukee resident Michael Gretzon. Gretzon graduated from Wausaukee High School in May of 2019 and enlisted in the Marines in October of that year. He was a member of the Wausaukee Volunteer Fire Department while still a student and after until he reported for training as a marine. He officially became a Marine in January of 2020. Many of the American servicemen injured in the August 26th attack were reportedly taken to Walter Reed Hospital for treatment, and Gretzon was among those taken there. Severity of his injuries is currently unknown.
