The first big snowstorm of the season has hit our region and representatives with the Wisconsin Public Service are reminding customers to clear snow and ice from natural gas meters and heating vents. A buildup of snow can place stress on a meter’s pipes, which could result in damage to the equipment and even a natural gas leak. Additionally, meters left covered by snow or ice may also lead to issues with home appliances or an interruption in service and snow can also block appliance vents, trapping carbon monoxide indoors. Residents should use hands or a broom instead of a shovel to clear snow and ice away from a meter as a shovel can damage the equipment. WPS adds that keeping meters clear of snow and ice allows WPS employees to properly and efficiently service them in an emergency.
