06/24/2019- The local YMCA is doing its part to make sure kids are fueled up for fun all summer long. They’re once again a participating site in the Summer Lunch Program hosted by Menominee Area Public Schools. As such, they offer free lunch to any child age 18 and under every weekday. Michell Hampton is the Corporate and Community Wellness Director at the Greater Marinette-Menominee YMCA. She says the program was born from a need to continue providing meals for students who receive free or reduced lunches during the school year, but there’s no financial or residential restrictions during the summer.
Hampton says it’s not just that there’s food on their plate, but what’s on the plate that matters, too. The Summer Lunch Program is a good opportunity to encourage and teach kids about proper nutrition.
These free lunches are offered at the YMCA from 10:55 until 11:15 AM. The DAR also serves lunch to kids from 11:30 until 11:50 AM. The program runs through August 23rd.
