Communities that Care and the Healthy Youth Coalition are hosting the second annual Kids Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, February 12th at Red Arrow Park. City of Marinette Captain Joe Nault says, “NKS Tire has stepped up this year to stock 130 rainbow trout that are from Silver Moon Springs Hatchery from the Northern part of the state.”

Nault says, “we encourage the public to come and join us and take part in the raffles.”

Trophies will also be given out to the kids by age class for bag limit and biggest fish in class. The event will begin at 11am with awards to be given out after 1pm and raffles to be drawn directly after. They provide a warming tent along with food and music. Come out to Red Arrow Park and enjoy the open air and clean fun that helps develop future sports competitors.

Healthy Youth Coalition/HYC is a youth-led organization that has active student groups in ten schools in both Marinette & Menominee counties. The focus is prevention of underage alcohol, tobacco product, and drug use. The students plan at least three prevention activities each year  (examples including hosting motivational guest speakers, having activities such as week-long random acts of kindness projects, prevention message projects around the holidays like Easter egg hunts, media campaigns such as radio ads and billboard design, youth summits, etc. These youth members pledge to be drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free while participating in HYC.

Communities that Care/CTC is an adult-led coalition that focuses on underage alcohol and tobacco product use. We work to make environment and policy change to ensure that our youth grow up in a safe community. There are four work groups comprising volunteer members from all sectors of our community (such as parents, non-profits, businesses, health departments and agencies, education, law enforcement, etc.) that meet monthly and work on separate tasks within our action plan. CTC is funded through a drug-free communities grant but must seek sustainability through fundraising efforts as this grant is only available for 10 years. HYC, however, functions solely on community donations and local grants.
