03/19/2019- Residents looking to catch some Fourth of July fireworks in the M&M area can do so on Marinette’s side of the river this year. This will be the third year Marinette and Menominee have jointly sponsored the Independence Day celebration, which, for the past two years, has been located in Menominee. However, for 2019, Marinette requested to host the event on Stephenson Island and that Menominee pitch in $5000 for it. The Menominee City Council took up the request Monday and, although there was some dissent at the committee level as to whether the City should contribute the $5000 that was asked for or a lesser amount, the conversation from the Council was minimal. Councilman Frank Pohlmann did speak up, however, to reiterate that the event is an easy opportunity to bring more unity to the area.
Pohlmann also suggested that the host city be responsible for the police, DPW, and children’s activities costs associated with the community fireworks display. City Council approved the $5000 and host location request from Marinette and City Manager Tony Graff says he’ll work with Marinette to establish a more formal agreement so both cities have a better idea of expectations moving forward.
